The Rotary Club of North Vancouver is working this fall to raise public awareness and action on preventable accidents by encouraging pedestrians to make themselves more visible at night.

North Van Rotary launches fall pedestrian safety campaign

Local service club distributing pedestrian safety reflectors by donation

It’s that time of year again when dark and rainy nights make it difficult for motorists to see pedestrians. Even when drivers proceed with caution, it's hard to see pedestrians when visibility is poor. And it doesn’t help when fall outdoor fashion typically trends to dark colours.

Each year over the past five on the Lower Mainland, an average of 1,800 pedestrians have been injured and 34 killed. Nearly half of all crashes with pedestrians happen between October and January. Many of these accidents are avoidable.

Pedestrian safety reflectors are a proven, simple and cost-effective way to be seen and be safe. All you need to increase your visibility and enable drivers to see you from a distance are small, double-sided prism reflectors dangling from your jacket pockets, purse, backpack or attached to your dog’s collar. That extra visibility gives drivers additional precious seconds to see you and react.

On weekends between October 16th and October 31st

The Rotary Club of North Vancouver will be distributing pedestrian safety reflectors by donation at locations throughout North Vancouver. Funds raised will support a parallel pedestrian safety awareness social media campaign and North Shore Rotary projects throughout the year focused on youth and strengthening our local community.

Rotary pedestrian safety reflectors are manufactured in Norway and are European compliant. They do not require batteries and can make you visible from 500 feet away if used correctly. For best results, it is recommended to use reflectors that dangle and move while you walk and to use two reflectors so you are seen from all sides. Suggested donation is $5.00 for two reflectors.
